A large evergreen tree, to 17 m high, trunk 1.2 m in diameter; bark dark brown, smooth, peeling in thin scales on old trees.
Leaves coriaceous, lanceolate to oblong, 6.5-12 cm long, 2-3 cm broad, dark green above, glaucescent beneath, the apex acute or briefly acuminate, base obtuse or attenuate, margins entire, lateral veins 9-12 pairs; petioles 0.5-2 cm long, furrowed above.
Flowers terminal; peduncles 1-1.5 cm long; spathaceous bracts brown, glabrous, 2.5 cm long; perianth-lobes 9-12, yellowish green, in 3-4 whorls, oblong to obovate-oblong, 2.5-4 cm long, 1-1.5 cm broad, the inner ones often smaller; stamens linear, 50-60, spirally arranged in 4-6 rows, filaments 0.2-0.3 cm long, anthers 1.2-1.5 cm long, connectives shortly elangated; gynoecium ovoid in outline, 1.2-1.4 cm long, gynophore 0.5-0.8 cm long; carpels 10-18 per gynoecium, free, later partly coalescent, spirally arranged; ovules 2 (sometimes 3 or 4) in a carpel.
Fruiting carpels 8-12, more or less coalescent in an irregularly ovoid mass, 2-2.5 cm long, 1.2-1.5 cm across, each carpel dehiscing along its dorsal suture.Seeds 1 or 2 in each carpel, reniform to subrounded.

台灣 : In the southeastern part of the island near the southernmost tip; scattered in evergreen, broad-leaved forests at low to medium altitudes (500-1,300 m).
